PAWS needs Volunteers!

paws volunteersPAWS, short for Philippine Animal Welfare Society is in need of volunteers. There’s so much you can do for the animals. A little time will go a long way in helping those poor animals. Here’s actually some of the things you can do:

  1. Office Assistant – The task is pretty simple and mostly is about paper works like processing adoption applications. Other functions would be to receive guests and tell them about the different programs offered by the organization, of course answering phone queries is also another task.
  2. Admitting – You will be involved in rescue operations and will be instrumental in completing the operation by processing admitting papers, taking pictures and uploading details in the animal database. Read more…

I Can With AICA Scholarship leaves a bad taste in my mouth!

Last Saturday, January 23rd, my husband and I went to Ortigas to “verify” our entry for the said “I Can with AICA” scholarship entry. I called up the school to ask a few details prior to going there. I asked for either Mia or Maria as instructed by their email. The receptionist asked what’s the reason for my call so I said that I’m calling about the scholarship. I told her I was told in the email that I only have until 12nn of that day to confirm my entry. She did not feel the need to transfer my call to Maria or Mia and it seems that she is capable of responding to my questions so I didn’t bother. She said they are extending it till Tuesday if I am not capable of dropping by their office that day. I asked if there is a way to confirm the entry by phone, but she said that they really need to see us. I asked if its for a short course or the full diploma course and she said it is for the entire diploma course. I then asked if there are incremental fees and she said that its absolutely free.

I know that it’s a contest and that there’s absolutely no way that they will be giving everyone who signs up a scholarship, that’d be too much money to waste. So I then asked my husband to come with me and check it out, after all we might have a chance of getting a slot. So we roused our little boy from his precious slumber and brought him along with us together with our new maid.

When we got there, we were given a form to fill out, along with other people who trooped to their office that early Saturday morning. We were also asked to accomplish an essay, requiring us to tell them why we deserve the scholarship. We saw a lot of people already filling out their papers while there seems to be a discussion on the other office, where it seems that some of the school staff were explaining something to another group of people. We heard the staff talking and telling each other they were overwhelmed at the number of people who decided to show up that day. Read more…

Dog Fights – A heart-wrenching battle of some of our Canine friends

I didn’t know such a practice existed until I was already out of college. I was a trainee back then at a call center and had a colleague who breeds dogs both for hobby and business. She breeds lots of dogs and one breed she is particularly fond of is the Pit Bull. I was under the impression that Pit bulls are dangerous and very temperamental, as people have stereotyped the said breed. Apparently and fortunately, I was wrong.

We, my husband (my boyfriend at that time) and I were invited by my friend to check out her place. Her dogs are all very sociable. I am a dog lover but when surrounded by too many dogs, of course, I don’t feel too comfortable. Add to that the fact that she has several Pit bulls. I was amazed that they were all too nice and sociable, their wiggly tails all signals that they want me to pet them. They are all so adorable. The dogs environment and how they are nurtured truly play a big role in their disposition.

Years later, when I was already working for another call center and have a team of my own, one of my staff is into the same hobby and business. One of his Pit bulls, is a champ on dog shows. We were surprised that he could leave his 2 yr old boy in the same room with his dog. We were amazed that it was the dog who is afraid of the kid. My staff’s kid would pinch and pull the dog and the dog would try to escape from him and hide from him. Judging from those 2 encounters, I could definitely say that dog aggression is only a product of bad pet owners. Read more…

My Name’s Meaning

baby names meaningsA name is very important for everyone, since we will be known and called by the name we were given by our parents until the day we breath our last and for some, long after they leave this world. In the past, a baby gets named after relatives long dead, usually a great grand parent or a grand parent, or for those religious folks, they normally look up the calendar to see who’s the saint being celebrated on that day their little one decided to grace the world with its presence. Others, try to be more creative and combine their names, I for one, am a product of that. But whatever means they arrived at that name, what’s more important is the meaning behind that name, since more often than not, the character of that child is influenced by the meaning of the name he/she is given.

Growing up, I find myself frustrated when it comes to looking up the meaning of my name. As I mentioned, my name is a combination of both my mom and dad’s name, Ernesto and Carolina. My mom opted to change the spelling a bit and drop off the “na” for a more contemporary sound. I’d surely won’t be happy if they decided to call me Erlina. So thankfully, they decided on the name Erlyn. But, well like what I said, it was extremely hard to look up the meaning of my name. Till I saw this website courtesy of Grace.

Although, the spelling is different, its the closest I could find for my name, and here goes…

Erline - a variant of Earla; the meaning of Erline is noblewoman, princess, warrior, countess.

That indeed made me smile :)

Curious about your name’s meaning? Check it out here.

Cebu Dancing Inmates with Michael Jackson’s Choreographer

The Cebu Inmates created headlines once again when they performed another Michael Jackson song, this time around with no less but MJ’s own choreographer! According to news, the said performance is included in “This Is It”. I’m not really a fan of MJ but well, it’s worthwhile to post something good about Filipinos once in a while. Instead of actually blogging about something to whine about, I decided it’ll be good to blog about something note worthy. Please click on the link below to watch the unedited version of the performance.

Facebook Privacy Settings – Simply Amazing!

Facebook is today’s hippest and most happening social networking site. Many avid users of MySpace, Friendsters and other social networking sites have transferred their accounts to the said site since it entered frame. One of the site’s biggest come on are the games – like Farmville (which so many people are addicted to), Mafia Wars and Fish World to name a few. Other features that make it a hit are the applications, events invites and fan pages – companies, celebrities and even politicians nowadays are capitalizing on this feature to increase their popularity. Ultimately, the site’s privacy settings made me decide to join the bandwagon and create an account with them as well.

Later on, I found myself surprised that I was able to actually view profiles and pictures of people who are technically strangers to me, but are somehow linked to me via common friends. It appears that if a friend of yours is tagged in an album of someone, regardless if they are in your network or not, you are still able to access their albums to see the pictures of your common friend. This to me is rather disconcerting.

I guess a lot of users have alerted Facebook about the situation I’ve mentioned. Thankfully, they came up with a way to enable its users to protect themselves – their all new Privacy settings. With the new Facebook privacy settings, you can fully control who sees your profile and what they see. Yesterday, I tried to tinker some of its features, I exempted 2 of my friends from seeing selected photo albums in my profile, not that I don’t like them or hold a grudge against them, but simply because they are related to my ex. What really amazed me is that I am capable of actually viewing my profile as how it would appear to these 2 people. Brilliant! With that I give Facebook a 2 thumbs-up for their new privacy settings.

Dollars for your thoughts!

Hi friends, I know that pay to click sites are very popular these days. They are a good way to generate passive income, but then again, if you are working and if you are busy, it will probably take years before you can get to the minimum pay out requirement since pay to click sites pay in cents per site.

The opportunity I’m about to offer you is different. I recently discovered this site, and yes it’s legit – it pays you for your opinion. It’s pretty simple, all you need to do is to sign up, and by signing up you already get $6.00, after which,  take as much surveys as you can. You will be given several websites to evaluate, and it takes an average of 5-10 minutes or less to do that per site. Minimum amount for each survey is $4.00. If you refer friends, it becomes even more fun because each referral gives you $1.25 additional money in your account.

This is a great opportunity for everyone, regardless if you are doing full time and part time work or just a home maker. Forget about earning cents, this is the way to go. And you don’t have to worry friends in the Philippines because they do allow sign ups from countries outside US. Payment redemption is via PayPal.

Well, I certainly hope I was able to help. :) Let’s start answering some surveys.

All about Stairs

If you are a personal friend or if you have been reading my blog, you know that we were victims of the Typhoon Ondoy and the flooding it created. We live in a bungalow house owned by my uncle, which we are renting. And after the Ondoy incident, we realized just how important it is to have a second floor, and well i guess it wont be bad to have a third floor as well.

In line with that, here’s some pretty cool staircases. Got this from a forwarded email from a former staff of mine.

A Quiz to start off 2010

My husband and I are addicted to the TV series Brothers and Sisters. Initially, I watched the show simply because it stars Calista Flockhart, who was Ally McBeal to the world in her previous TV Series lifetime. After watching 2 episodes, I got hooked and I told my husband to watch the show because there’s so much parallelism in his own family. He actually agreed after watching a few episodes himself and then, we told his eldest brother to watch it as well, for the same reason that it somewhat mirrors a lot of characters and situations in their own family, and he too got hooked. :)

Anyway, my husband will absolutely agree to the results of the quiz.
