MILF ISSUES

A few days ago, we are saddened by the news about deaths of young soldiers. To be exact, there’s a total of 19 government soldiers who were killed in the said encounter with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front at Al-Barka, Basilan. I’ve heard from neighbors that news there were 50 soldiers up against 200 Moro soldiers, which really sounded like a suicide mission.

Predictions about Apocalypse Now

Time and time again some heads of different denominations would have predictions about apocalypse and would state that it would happen at a given date. In my 30 years of existence there has been several religious heads who’ve made a fool out of themselves by giving a specific date about the doomsday, only to take it back when it didn’t happen. Dog Rescued at Sea (after 3 weeks)

It’s amazing and truly wonderful that this dog survived three weeks after that monstrous tsunami devastated Japan. The dog was rescued by the coast guard and was presumed to have been at sea for the entire 3 weeks.

Waiting for a Phone Call

My cousin went to Libya two weeks before all hell broke loose in there. He was deployed there to work as a nurse in a hospital in Tripoli. We were of course happy that he will finally be able to go abroad and work as a nurse as there’s a surplus of registered nurses here and it is extremely difficult to get a job. When he left we were also happy because he left us some of his stuff which became our new toys, like this desk top I’m using right now and his other ipod and blackberry phone. The only thing he didn’t entrust us with was his nikon rifle scope which he left in the care of his girlfriend’s dad who is also a collector of nikon rifles.

The week before last week, he called up his girlfriend to say that they are okay and that he did not sign up for the voluntary evacuation as they are okay. And last week I still had a chance to talk to him via YM and he once again told us he’s okay. Now that Kadafi has issued a warning that they will definitely declare war once the US decides to meddle with the situation it got us all the more worried. And yesterday he called his girlfriend to say that they don’t have internet access again, you could just imagine how worried we are. I just hope things get better and well, as the cliche goes, please help us pray for world peace.

Remembering EDSA1

Tomorrow marks the 25th year of the EDSA Revolution. I was 5 at the time it happened. It is indeed a memorable day! It has marked the day when the Filipinos decided that they finally had enough of the evil dictatorship of Mr. Marcos. What made it even more memorable and admired by the rest of the world, was the fact that it is a bloodless and peaceful revolution.

Today, we have the freedom of speech. People are able to walk down the street during wee hours of the night without being questioned by armed military men. Today, we are able to freely express our two cents on issues of the government without fearing to be silenced by people who do not want the truth to be told. At least, most are able to.

Flooding in Queensland Australia

It was devastating to see the video footages and photographs of the recent flooding in Australia. Last time I read the news 78 were missing/dead, it is not unlikely that it has already went up by now. It only goes to show that despite the fact that Australia is a first-world country, they are not exempted to these kind of calamities. Death and natural disasters are indeed great equalizers.

Now the question is, what do we do about it. Flooding and earthquakes are happening left and right and climate change is advancing at a pace that is rather too alarming. We are truly in the brink of a climate change. I say, people should really start thinking about the environment. Plastic production should be slowed down to prevent non-biodegradable wastes, recycle, re-forestation and do more green study to help save the environment. These calamities is Mother Nature’s way of reaching out to us and telling us that we need to do something, it is its cry for help.  Let’s all respond to that call.

MANILA BUS HOSTAGE TAKING

Here’s another negative issue about Manila police. A discharged police officer deemed it rightful to hostage a bus filled with tourists, apparently asking to be reinstated and be cleared of any charges.

POLICE BRUTALITY AT AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT LEVEL

Since I went back to work, I haven’t been able to read through newspapers and watch news on tv. It was only at the latter part of last week that I heard of the police torture done by Manila policemen to a suspected snatcher. It was another police who perhaps took the courage to capture the inhumane act via his mobile phone. The suspect was stripped naked, and his genitals were tied to a rope. Each time the guy failed to answer the policemen’s questions Mr Binayug, the officer who was said to be holding the rope tugs hard at it, while his troops would hit the guy repeatedly.

It is these kind of incidents that make civilians regard police officers as law breakers instead of enforcers. It is really sad and quite unfair for all those honest and noble policemen. I certainly hope and pray that justice be served to the wretched guy who died of torture under the hands of these police officers.
