TOO MANY NURSES…SO FEW JOBS

A few months back the Department of Education issued a statement discouraging high school graduates from taking up Nursing in College. This is all because of the fact that there’s a surplus of nursing graduates in the country, Read more…

NURSING GRADUATES ENDING UP JOBLESS

The Philippine Department of Education has issued a statement, months ago, discouraging high school graduates not to opt to take up nursing when they go to college. Why so, you may ask. Well, first and foremost, there’s a surplus, well, more than a surplus of nursing graduates in the Philippines today. It is so difficult to find a job, which is your primary ticket to home for aging people like the Denver Nursing Home in the States or elsewhere. Read more…

ON CHOOSING A COLLEGE DEGREE

While I was contemplating of what has become of my life overall, among the many realizations I’ve had, one relates to the college degree I’ve chosen.

Deteriorating Education

image taken from dipperharbourdiva.com

A few days ago I passed by our friendly neighborhood mini mart and saw something chained to their gate. Then I saw a carton about the size of a short bond paper. Written on it are the words TV Rock for Sale instead of TV rack or TV stand for sale. I found myself laughing over it, but when I saw it for several more days, I felt a tinge of sadness every time I see it. Why? Because the family who owns the store are people with college degree holders. Both parents retired from their corporate lives and decided to put up a store for a living. With them in the house are their 3 children who are now all in high school and are all studying in exclusive schools. Also living with them was their cousin – our son’s former OT who now has his own therapy center. I was expecting someone will be able to correct the spelling, but no one did. I guess that’s just a clear indication that the education system here in our country has gone from bad to worse. :( And all because most of the good teachers have decided to work in different countries, thus the brain drain. :(

Figuring out PHP Codes

puzzled, confused and close to being brain dead

Saw that caption on the picture? Yep, that’s exactly how my head feels now. I just tried changing my blog’s layout and some of my banners and widgets are still not showing up. I swear PHP is so much harder than HTML! Back in the early 2000′s when I started blogging, I got to figure out basic html codes. I find it harder to crack this PHP codes. If only I have time to sign up for an online IT degree (that may be too ambitious, so perhaps a short course), then perhaps I could master the art of having a perfect blog layout. Well, even so, I think my brain is not just cut out for it, my inclination is more of the arts.
Speaking of online studies, I’m thinking of what might be a good skill to learn in the internet. Something that would have certification would be great. Kids these days are lucky because of the convenience of technology. Distance education is becoming more and more popular. Of course the first thing that makes sense when you speak of education using the internet would be IT courses for online IT degree. And then of course the list goes on. It’s even surprising that you can learn a lot of things from youtube video tutorials. Alright, that’s it, I’m going back to these php codes now.

Congratulations to Batch 2011

Here in the Philippines, it’s the time for student graduation once again! I pray that those who graduated from college for this year will not become just part of the statistics of the unemployed. For those who graduated from elementary education and from secondary education, I pray that you will continue with the rest of your education. Try to really find out what you want to do and learn everything you can about the field that interests you the most, because when you start working later on, you will want to work in the field where you are most inclined to do well.

For those who graduated from elementary and secondary education, try to have fun during the summer vacation and learn new skills. While for those of you who graduated from college, try to spread your resume while resting, and it won’t hurt to up-skill yourselves.

To one of my nephews, congratulations! We pray that you do well in high school and yes, we’ll see you soon, together with the hip hop clothing that you requested for your graduation gift! ;)

Short Attention Span due to Twitter and the likes

I do not have statistics to back up this statement of mine, this is based on my mere personal experience and observations. I need not point towards other people because I have myself as an example to begin with when I say that Twitter, Plurk and micro-blogging has indeed shortened my attention span.
Back in 2003, when I was still working as a phone rep, before my shift starts, I would check out all my friends blogs and copy all their most recent posts (most of it have a minimum of 5-10 paragraphs), put those posts in my desktop’s notepad, each post separated by the names of each of my blogger friend at the start of the post. And well, I have tons of blogger friends then, each day I make it a point to visit 10 sites. And during low call volume, I try to keep myself occupied by reading through those posts. Back then blogging is still very  much uncommon and unheard of. If you have a blog, it’s either you’re a geek or you’re fond of journalizing your thoughts. I was part of the second group. And when you blog and read blogs, you tend to gravitate towards blogs with the same content. Okay I’m rambling. To cut it short, most of the blogs back then are personal blogs, so reading through people’s blogs back then is like getting a picture of their life and the thoughts that go into their heads. And the same is true for me, you’d read through a cycle of heartbreak and well, endless lamentations I had back then. Aside from my penchant for reading blogs back then, I also finished the entire Da Vinci Code in my teammate’s Palm Pilot. I used to read a minimum of one book a month back then, and for 2005 I managed to finish 29 books for the entire year! Now it’s a totally different story. Read more…

Online Everything

It’s amazing how every thing seems to be accessible to us through the use of the internet. It was only when I got pregnant when I got fascinated with online shopping and bidding at eBay and recently, I have been getting great and very affordable buys from a fellow blogger friend. She just updates the pictures in her facebook account and we leave a comment on which blouses we like and then pay her via PayPal. After a day or two, I get the package in the mail. Amazing right?

Well, aside from internet banking and shopping, education has also been re-invented by the world of cyberspace. Nowadays you can get a master’s degree online, you can also sign up for distance education, as well as online trade schools. With the internet, the world is literally within your finger tips. :)
