A few days ago I passed by our friendly neighborhood mini mart and saw something chained to their gate. Then I saw a carton about the size of a short bond paper. Written on it are the words TV Rock for Sale instead of TV rack or TV stand for sale. I found myself laughing over it, but when I saw it for several more days, I felt a tinge of sadness every time I see it. Why? Because the family who owns the store are people with college degree holders. Both parents retired from their corporate lives and decided to put up a store for a living. With them in the house are their 3 children who are now all in high school and are all studying in exclusive schools. Also living with them was their cousin – our son’s former OT who now has his own therapy center. I was expecting someone will be able to correct the spelling, but no one did. I guess that’s just a clear indication that the education system here in our country has gone from bad to worse.
And all because most of the good teachers have decided to work in different countries, thus the brain drain.
Here in the Philippines, it’s the time for student graduation once again! I pray that those who graduated from college for this year will not become just part of the statistics of the unemployed. For those who graduated from elementary education and from secondary education, I pray that you will continue with the rest of your education. Try to really find out what you want to do and learn everything you can about the field that interests you the most, because when you start working later on, you will want to work in the field where you are most inclined to do well.
For those who graduated from elementary and secondary education, try to have fun during the summer vacation and learn new skills. While for those of you who graduated from college, try to spread your resume while resting, and it won’t hurt to up-skill yourselves.
To one of my nephews, congratulations! We pray that you do well in high school and yes, we’ll see you soon, together with the hip hop clothing that you requested for your graduation gift!

It’s amazing how every thing seems to be accessible to us through the use of the internet. It was only when I got pregnant when I got fascinated with online shopping and bidding at eBay and recently, I have been getting great and very affordable buys from a fellow blogger friend. She just updates the pictures in her facebook account and we leave a comment on which blouses we like and then pay her via PayPal. After a day or two, I get the package in the mail. Amazing right?
Well, aside from internet banking and shopping, education has also been re-invented by the world of cyberspace. Nowadays you can get a master’s degree online, you can also sign up for distance education, as well as online trade schools. With the internet, the world is literally within your finger tips.
A not-so-fit Future?
It has often been said that our future lies in the children of our country.
But what kind of future is in store for us when Philippine Statistics show that approximately 8 million Filipino children are malnourished?
Various nutrition education programs during Nutrition Month have been implemented to underscore the importance of proper nutrition among schoolchildren.
To teach schoolchildren about nutrition is already something. But to revolutionize it into a nationwide interschool competition for them to learn is something else.
That is why Kraft Cheez Whiz, one of the most-loved cheese brands in the country in partnership with the Department of Education has come up with Palamantasan–the first interschool competition among grade school students nationwide in a quest for nutrition education.
Education is still the key
In line with the Department of Education’s thrust to enhance nutrition education in schools, Kraft Cheez Whiz chose to do a school-based program to further raise public consciousness. “School is second to home where children learn basic lessons and values,” Alex Dan Tacderas, Category Manager for Cheese and Spoonables, Kraft Foods Philippines shares. “That is why we wanted to direct our cause and execute our program in schools–in both an enjoyable and educational way,” Tacderas adds. Kids these days are amazingly smart. I was told by a friend that one of his kid’s classmates is so witty, he already knows how to spell the words malignant Mesothelioma, to think that he’s only 7. I guess it’s not that surprising given that the kid has doctors for both parents. What’s more surprising is the fact that he knows that the said words is used to refer to a certain kind of cancer. Reminds me of my cousin Jhon-V when he was still 5 and I was 16. He was talking to me about computer speed and internet connection.

Technology has indeed changed the way things are done these days, including education. While distance education has long been offered in some learning institutions, it was done through mail correspondence. As such, problems like missing correspondence is quite an issue back then. It not only delays the institution, it likewise causes unwanted delay for the learner.
Nowadays, people have the option to enroll in online universities in order to get a degree. It enables the learner to have a flexible schedule, therefore making mastery of subject matter very much possible. Aside from a flexible schedule, the learner also benefits from having saving on costs, costs that are inevitable when attending university the traditional way.
But before you decide to sign up for the first online university you see in cyberspace, there are a lot of things you have to consider. For one, you have to make sure that the institution where you will sign up to get your degree is one that is recognized and accredited. Make sure you are not signing up with pseudo-universities online who intends to rip you off your hard earned money.
Since I’ve been looking for reputable online universities, I recently came across Western Governors University. It was a brainchild of 19 US governors who wanted to provide quality education for more and more people. What’s more impressive is that they are competency-based not credits-based. So no need to work on hours and hours on end to earn your degree. If you can prove that you already know what you were taught that you can quicken your pace and earn you degree in no time. A good example of this is their RN to BSN online program.
