A great surprise

Last Friday, my son gave me a wonderful surprise! They went home from school with that stamp mark on Nathan’s hand. Actually last Friday was the second time he had a good job stamp mark. That picture was taken on the first time he got the mark. Hopefully by January we could start with speech therapy already. :)

Johnson and Johnson’s Mommy Bloggers Meet up

j&jLast Saturday – May 29, 2010, Johnson & Johnson’s held the third part of its Mommy bloggers meet up. It was my first time to attend as I was able to agree to attend other events during the first two scheduled meet ups. But I’m all set for the rest. I met other mom’s, soon-to-be mom’s, and would-be mom’s in the future (the single ladies). Anyway, we met at Dulcinea in Eastwood. Mee-i and I thought there was no one at the venue just yet so off we ate at McDonald’s for breakfast. When we came back after, it was only then that we found out that the event will be taking place at the second floor of Dulcinea and it’s already started. So yeah, we were fashionably late.

The main topics we’ve discussed are: 1.) Creating a Safe Environment for your Baby  2.) Touch Therapy and how it improves your child’s development Read more…

BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER

supersized baby
If most Filipinos were asked to describe what a healthy five-month old baby looks like, chances are they would depict an infant that was chubby, rosy-cheeked, glowing, and slightly bigger or taller than other infants. Simply put, it’s a pleasantly plump baby that looks like a character in a Fernando Botero painting.

Although slightly plump babies may look cuter or more robust than “slimmer” infants, the truth is they are over-nourished or overfed than they should be. They are also more prone to diseases and ailments later in life.

3-IN-1 HIGH CHAIR

high chairLast year we finally got my son a high chair, after he turned 2. It was actually late already, considering babies from 9mos of age can already be placed in a high chair and start joining family dinners. They should be taught early on that eating is also a form of socialization. Anyway, the one we got looks very similar to that one on the picture. It is a good buy! It’s a 3-in-1 high chair. Aside from functioning as a high chair, it also doubles as a study table (bottom portion) and chair, once you take off the chair and reposition the bottom part. On the top of table comes a little knob, and when you turn it around, it opens a little compartment that could hold little toys, and it also functions as lego blocks holder.

The one we bought is also very sturdy and very easy to assemble. It comes with plastic knobs and screws and you can turn it around just by the use of a coin. :)

Alpha protein proven to improve infant’s long-term health

Cases of long-term health problems like obesity, cardiovascular ailments, and insulin resistance have been increasing year after year. These have prompted medical professionals to look beyond medical treatments and seek effective preventive measures. Infant nutrition, particularly protein intake during the early stages of infancy, has been identified in strengthening or weakening a person’s long-term health.

Controlled random examinations in preterm and term infants cited by the research paper, “Early origins of cardiovascular disease. Is there a unifying hypothesis?” by Lucas Singhal, proved that “early nutrition has a major impact on long-term health including cognitive function, bone health, and risk factors for cardiovascular disease.”

Dr. Atul Singhal, a professor of Pediatric Nutrition and deputy director of the University College London, explained in a forum that the long-term growth and development of infants depended not just on the quantity of nourishment they receive but on the quality as well. He also heads the Clinical Trials and Cardiovascular Nutrition group at the MRC Childhood Nutrition Research Centre’s Institute of Child Health at University College London, which researched on “The Importance of Protein for Long-term Health.” Read more…

ABA Evaluation and progress update

ABA is short for Applied Behavior Analysis. This morning, my son’s new therapist and the case manager came over to evaluate him and to draft a program that will help him most. We were referred to ABA Teamworks by Dra. Eusebio when we went to her last March 10. Unlike his occupational therapy sessions that is held at his OT’s house, the ABA sessions are going to be held in our house. The main aim is to work on his compliance so we can start with his speech therapy. He needs to be more imitative and he needs to be more proficient with ADL (Average Daily Living) functions.

I was actually happy about the case manager and the two therapists who came over. For 30 mins the little guy just cried trying to see if he can crack them up and get his way. After that he warmed up and they went ahead and did the activities to further assess him. I like the fact that they left us a handbook to explain their company policies and the requirements. Along with that they asked for a notebook, it will be a progress book. Every time the therapists will come over they will write down what happened and what the kid was able to accomplish.

This morning, the little guy managed to say the word “car” as he was coaxed by the case manager. So I was very pleased. He was also babbling the entire day. Another thing that we were very pleased is that while we (mom, me and the kiddo), were at the grocery he did something that really amazed us. While he was inside the cart along with the items we were buying, mom asked him to pick up the item he’s using for bathing. And the little guy picked up the J&J milk bath refill and kissed it. In the afternoon, after he peed and when we were getting ready to leave for an afternoon walk and a trip to the grocery, I got a diaper from the cabinet and gave it to him. I then instructed him to hold it and go to the other room and hand it over to his granny who will put it on him. And he obliged. I’m really ecstatic. :)

late 20s

As one of my friends commented on my Facebook wall, I’m now officially in the late 20s. A few more minutes and my birthday will be over. And in just a matter of minutes, my husband and I will be celebrating our third year wedding anniversary. 24 hours after we celebrate those three years of blessed and wonderful union, it will be my husband’s turn to blow a candle on a birthday cake.

So what transpired today now that I turned 29? No birthday cake this year, didn’t feel the need to despite the fact that in my book a birthday is not a birthday if there’s no cake. What I’d like to remember for this day is the fact that today, my son had his first OT (Occupational Therapy) Session. The first of many to come. Why does he need that? That will be for another post.

Anyway, that’s all for now. Will head off to the shower before I go to bed.

my little clock watcher

the little clock watcher

the little clock watcher

Some time last week, our house helpers told me that my little boy learned something new. I could not comprehend how he learned it and am completely amazed when I was told about it, more so when I actually caught him in the act of doing it.

I’m sure the title of my post gave it away anyway. Let me just explain it further. Over the last couple of weeks, I was given quite an odd shift – 4am – 1pm. Because of the distance between our house and where my office is located, add to that the fact that I have to take several mode of transportation to get home, I normally get home at 3pm or past 3pm, well, mostly past 3pm to be more specific. When I get home, my routine is to do my daily ablutions prior to kissing the little boy, of course I want to make sure I’m squeaky clean before I embrace my son. After which, we – me, my son and the 2 helpers would normally go out, either for a walk or to get something in the wet and dry market.  This is how I spend my quality time with my son, doing what he loves best – going out of the house. :)

Going back, my helpers told me that he’s learned to watch the clock especially when it’s about to turn three in the afternoon. He was doing that for a number of days until they figured out that he was checking the time because  he knows mommy’s about to arrive from work and then of course, his favorite time of the day will come – the time he gets to go out and ride a tricycle. :) He still talks gibberish and sometimes he can actually utter a few words, but well, I’m not in a hurry anyway since it’s pretty normal for little boys to talk much later than girls of the same age. At the same time, I know that he’s progressing well, taking into account all the things he’s starting to do – clock watching for one!

Well, I certainly hope you guys had a great and blessed Sunday!
