Office Politics

Whether you’re a rank and file employee personnel, in mid-management or upper management, office politics is something that you will experience whether you like it or not. In 10 years of working in a corporate set up, I’ve met with people who will do whatever they can just to move up the corporate ladder. When I say whatever, I mean whatever. I saw people who’d turn on their peers and tell on them to get the favor of  the big boss, others who slept their way up and others who love to take credit of the hard work of other people. The sad reality is that, some people believe that the end justify the means, so whatever it takes, no matter how many people they step on, what matters is at the end of the day, they get the promotion.

When you’re already in the mid-management and senior management level, you’ll meet people who has skewed concept of “perception management”, and that is, to dish dirt on other people, hype on other people’s weaknesses so they look better. When it comes to pressing issues, they try to sweep the dirt under the rug, all in the spirit of perception management. So wrong! The only way you build credibility and integrity is by being honest. At the end of the day, it all boils down to being able to sleep soundly at night knowing that you did not step on anyone’s toes and that you were honest in and out.

Last thing you may want to remember is that you came to work to work, and not to make friends. Never let your guard down, never trust anyone, always second guess everyone. The person you trusted most today may be the person who will tell on you tomorrow. Those are the only certainties about office politics.

Home office

I’m seriously thinking of building a home office. It will be useful for me whenever I have to work from home, at the same time if we have plans of having a business, all the more that we will need one. The only problem is that we have a limited space, so we are considering having one when we move to another house. As such, it will be a mid-term plan, something that is most likely to happen in 5 years.

Anyway, if it’s something that we will badly need, then perhaps we’ll just have to place it in the living room. Anyway, we have the essentials already, of course the laptop, some basic office supplies, 2 hp printers that are currently stacked up in our cabinets and a fax machine we were sent by my uncle from Italy. All I need is to think of a good business and create a business plan. :)

WHY GO INTO DIGITAL PRINTING BUSINESS

digital printing businessThe worldwide financial crisis has got a lot of people thinking on what other businesses they can come up with to augment their current source of income. Others opted going into the food industry, something I’m not very keen on. Anyway, another low start-up business you can engage in would be the digital printing business. Why you ask me?

1.) You can start up small – if you have a computer at home and a colored printer then you’re all set. You can opt to convert your printers to continuous ink, they said its more ink efficient.

2.) With almost everyone owning a cellphone with built in camera, you have a lot of potential customers.

3.) Other potential customers would be people needing a calling card, those who want to avail of poster printing services and well the regular picture printing.

4.) The things you need do not spoil easily, unlike when you are in the food business.

CREATE A BETTER LOOKING RESUME

shredderSave your resume from the shredder and get HR folks to actually read it, by creating one that looks professional and polished. Fact is, these days, more and more resumes are ending up in the trash or the shredder. So here’s a few tips to ensure, yours don’t suffer the same fate.

Give your resume a much needed face lift by considering these things:

  • Go for a neat and professional look. Never make the mistake of using colored fonts or papers just to make your cv stand out. Yes, it’s a guarantee that it will be noticed and will be looked at, but chances are, it’s also headed for the trash can or the shredder. Neat and professional means, you use fonts that are easy on the eyes and not hard to read, and that the capital letters, italics, underlined texts are consistent. Oh, and make sure you don’t have typographical errors. Remember, your resume is your first step into selling yourself, so it has to be perfect. Read more…

Waiting… for a phone call

Recovered_JPEG Digital Camera_8349Been a week from the time hubby went to that final interview for that job he really wanted. And he’s been rather frantic every time his mobile phone would ring or would make a sound due to incoming text messages. I guess the recent global recession has made companies resort to a more stringent employee screening process. Oh well, I guess we just have to pray more and keep looking.

Hubby’s chain of interviews

Hubby resigned from work last August. He was initially planning to set up a small business with his retirement pay. Unfortunately, we were badly affected by the flooding caused by typhoon Ondoy (internationally known as typhoon Ketsana) and so the retirement and back pay that he got from his previous employer all went to restoring and reconstructing everything. And with the number of things we have to pay for, add to that our son’s occupational therapy sessions, he decided he needs to find a job again, one that pays every 15th and 30th of the month.

time off

Rest days or time away from work is too precious, that it seems to almost slip by unnoticed. I guess that has to account for the fact that I no longer enjoy what I’m doing and I definitely am not denying that. I would have drafted, printed and turned over my resignation letter in a heartbeat, had my husband stayed with the big C. I guess it’s his turn to rest now. In the mean time I’ll have to drag myself each and every working day to go to the office and put up with someone who has an alternate reality. I am tempted to go on in detailing the animosity and mental wellness of the said persona but I decided not to. Not because I fear that the said imp will find out of this entry, but simply because I paid precious money for this domain and hosting package, and I don’t believe such a lowly creature deserves much more space.

Good night people!

Deja Vu

cluttered desk

cluttered desk

Tomorrow I will have seven (7) new agents added to my current team of four (4). Quite manageable you’d say. Perhaps I would agree with that given my circumstances four years ago, meaning – single, without child and without so much bills. Today, I’m going through the motions as if I was walking down this path for the very first time.

I work for the BPO industry, specifically in a contact center, where the company generates revenue from having a pool of phone representatives answer to client’s customer calls day in and day out.

I am actually wondering how come I feel quite inadequate to be handling a team all over again, to think that I was able to manage a team of 40 agents for 11 months in the past. I guess things had to change at one point. In my walk with God, I know that God has had to humble me and is still trying to humble me in a lot of areas in my life and one of that is at work. I used to be very cocky, thinking that I have all the answers and that I am good due to the fact that I was able to inspire a lot of my subordinates to reach greater heights. But looking back now, I would say that it just always because the Lord is saving me each and every time.

I am anticipating that the coming days will be so much challenging and to some point stressful, but I trust that the Lord will be there for me each and every time.
