Office Politics

Whether you’re a rank and file employee personnel, in mid-management or upper management, office politics is something that you will experience whether you like it or not. In 10 years of working in a corporate set up, I’ve met with people who will do whatever they can just to move up the corporate ladder. When I say whatever, I mean whatever. I saw people who’d turn on their peers and tell on them to get the favor of  the big boss, others who slept their way up and others who love to take credit of the hard work of other people. The sad reality is that, some people believe that the end justify the means, so whatever it takes, no matter how many people they step on, what matters is at the end of the day, they get the promotion.

When you’re already in the mid-management and senior management level, you’ll meet people who has skewed concept of “perception management”, and that is, to dish dirt on other people, hype on other people’s weaknesses so they look better. When it comes to pressing issues, they try to sweep the dirt under the rug, all in the spirit of perception management. So wrong! The only way you build credibility and integrity is by being honest. At the end of the day, it all boils down to being able to sleep soundly at night knowing that you did not step on anyone’s toes and that you were honest in and out.

Last thing you may want to remember is that you came to work to work, and not to make friends. Never let your guard down, never trust anyone, always second guess everyone. The person you trusted most today may be the person who will tell on you tomorrow. Those are the only certainties about office politics.

Busy weekend

image taken from illustrationsource.com

This weekend is absolutely going to be busy. I wish I could make each weekend day strecth to 40 hours each just so I could do all the things I want and need to do.

Well, first thing tomorrow I have a client presentation! Thank you Lord for referrals and clients, I certainly pray that I get to close another sale tomorrow. So the first appointment is at 10AM. What makes it hard to forget is that the street name where my client lives is named  Peacock Alley. Okay okay it’s just me and my “dirty” mind. I just really don’t like the sound of it. hehehe :)

After my appointment that morning, I’m off to the south to meet with my former reps turned good friends. We’re supposed to have dinner but then they decided to do it earlier so I’ll just catch up with them.

Sunday, we have a baby Christening and birthday party to attend. Wow! I just wish I could multiply myself. :) I just wish for lazy weekends. Oh well, may be it’s time to file a long vacation leave, eh?

Forked Road

Today, I’m facing a difficult predicament. I’m torn between continuing to work in a corporate set up which comes with a steady monthly income, or take the road less travelled by taking online jobs and my sales career which leaves me with more time with my son. I hope there is an easier way. I feel that I’m not doing more for my son with the current set up that we have. I barely have time to read to him. :(

Oh Lord, show me the way.

Fleeting Weekend

Weekends come by so fast, before you know it, it’s Monday once again! For us who are working in a corporate set up, weekends are most preciuos. This is actually the time of the week that we most look forward to. No matter how much one loves his or her job, I actually do not know of anyone who doesn’t wish for the weekdays to speed up in anticipation of the weekend.

It is the time of the week when we get to recharge our batteries, try (yes in my case, it’s mostly just try) to do the things that we like and have fun, and be with the people that we love. So how do we make the best of these two fleeting days? Simple. Plan your weekend schedule ahead of time. Try to put in relaxing activities such as getting a massage, a foot spa or a mani/pedi. Or if you have the luxury of time, then go out of town and leave everything that will remind you of the things that you will have to worry at work. If you’re going out of town, it is best to actually get someone else to drive, so you can really get to relax. If going out of town already sounds tiring, and if you have the luxury of money, then the next best thing is to check in in a hotel. Sounds too expensive? Well, I say you stay home and order pizza to be delivered at your doorstep and put on your favorite shows. :) Sounds like a plan, eh? Well, I’m opting for the last one tomorrow. Today we’re off to see our relatives who are here for vacation. :)

Cravings for Ice Cream

image taken from recipes.howstuffworks.com

Absolutely craving for ice cream right now. And yeah, diet is still suspended. :P It’s going to be a long night for me here at the office (yeah, bummer! I work nights!), I’m pulling a double shift tonight and so I may have to give in to my cravings for sweets, paticularly ice cream – to get me through the night. When you’re doing an extended shift you really have to an extra serving of sugar to keep you awake. The down side to it though, is that after your energy peaks up, it leaves you all the more tired and sleepy.

Right now I’m dreaming of tomorrow, of spending the night tucked up in bed tomorrow beside my little boy. :) Tonight, though I will be working and to keep me occupied every so often, I’m reading an interesting diet pill forum I chanced upon. Hopefully, that would be enough, well, along with my ice cream later on (how ironic!), to keep me from sleeping.

Sideline Galore

image taken from fotosearch.com

I need more time! So many things I want to do and have to do. It seems that I hardly have time to slow down. I have a full time job, and on top of that I have tons of side line as a means of generating additional income. Lately, it feels like the only thing I do in the house is sleep, take a bath and change and then leave again. There’s just so many things happening. Below are the things that I’m currently engaged in:

- real estate business

- educational programs

- health and wellness business

I have tons of print ads and I guess I ought to get rubber stamps, just to be a little kinder to my hands. I do not want to write my name and contact information on more than 300 flyers. Well, anyway at least the holidays is bound to give me a much needed break.

Working too hard can kill you

We cannot be careful these days.  I remember a saying that too much of anything is bad.  Take for example one of our neighbors.

He lived in a far away province as a miner.  He started working there since he was 18.  The guy was a hard worker, works twelve hour shifts and never misses a day of work.  He worked so hard that he never married, never had any kids, and a handful of his so called friends.  He always said that too much hard work was never enough.  A person must work as hard as he can and everything would fall into place.  I never really believed him, I always believed that a balance should be maintained at all times.  Some of our neighbors told him to think of another way to earn a living since working everyday in a min can cause serious damage to his lungs like Mesothelioma or something else.  But he never listened.

One day we found out he got sick.  He was bed ridden for months.  He’s ok now but the doctors told him he shouldn’t exert too much effort since his body took too much damage from his condition.  Bad thing is, he’s alone and there’s no one to really take care of him.  His fellow miners often come by to check on him from time to time but there is really no one to look after him.

We should always be mindful of that we are working to live and not living to work.  Those two are very different things.

Skilled Workers Needed in Canada and Australia

Skilled workers are very much in demand in first world countries more especially in Canada and Australia. Skills in demand are welding, meat slicing, baking, plumbing etc., most jobs that we regard as blue collar job. On the other hand, these first world countries are likewise in need of doctors, dentists and other workers in the medical profession. In the past, I used to check out job openings abroad. Although at that time, more workers were needed in the Middle East. There were several job openings for hotels, restaurants and mall supervisors and managers. I would have applied in a heartbeat, but one of my biggest challenge was not knowing how to use a POS Systems. Or may be, I’m just holding back then for some other things.

Well, now that we are more established, perhaps it will be best to start working on our immigration papers again, and start learning some of the needed skills while waiting. :)

Beyond Tired

Wow, I realized this is actually the second time I used Beyond Tired as a title. And well as of this time, it’s a new record. Last Thursday, I got in the office at roughly 6pm and ended my shift at 9am the next day. I went home and I had to drop by the wet and dry market to buy supplies for the house. Then I slept for almost 2 hours when I got home and after that I was off to the office once again to attend a 2pm roadshow from HR.

The hubby and I got home last night at 830sh. I just kissed and hugged my little boy and then dropped into the bed, without actually changing and doing my nightly ablutions. I was merely going for a few minutes of shut eye. But lo and behold, it as if I actually turned to sleep aids that I woke up the next morning. The husband just put on a blanket over me since I absolutely knocked out.  Well, catch you later folks, I’m off to get some more Zsss. :)
